Early in the war a balloon corps under the direction of Thaddeus Lowe was established and attached to the Army of the Potomac. The cavalry, organized into a division on August 17, 1862, and into a corps on September 9, 1863, was commanded by Maj. The Nun’Álvares Division would be the strongest and best equipped permanent force of the Portuguese Army, serving as its main training organization. Along with other combat medics from the 466th, Mannetti operated in a clinic at Camp Smith Training Site, in-processing and caring for Guard members coming onto the mission.
